Gasoline is cause for a trip!

We are all feeling the pressure, whether you drive or not the rising cost of gasoline and crude oil is effecting us all. It is causing more and more people to drive less, use alternate transportation, spend less of what use to be disposable income for entertainment, and have to think twice about driving to Mom’s house for weekly family gatherings.

All this, when the oil companies are reporting profits in the billions and companies are having to charge more for services that require the movement of product or people. Unfortunately Aelatis Technology is experiencing a squeeze here too.

But I tell you what we are doing to help with the sticker shock on gasoline. We are trying to drive less and find ways to better manage our customers. If your computer is able to get on the Internet, we can even assist you remotely. This is not only more green for the environment but it also can help your bottom line too. This service is not as expensive for us to offer, so it will become the primary tool that we use to fix an ailing computer or to answer your computer questions.

We are also sharing in the burden of the cost of the gasoline for our service calls. If there is no way around sending an engineer onsite, then we are covering some of the cost, but unfortunately we have had to pass on some of the costs to the customer. Being an international provider of computer, telecom and engineering services this means that our costs are dynamic from coast to coast.

So what kind of action can we do as a country with representation in Washington D.C.? I normally don’t try to start a grassroots movement but we need to do something. We have jobs being outsourced to other countries (and if you call our competitors for computer support you know what I mean) and gas prices are going up. People simply cannot afford to live the American dream. We are stuck at home not because we choose to, but because we cannot afford to enjoy what this country has to offer. So we need to start contacting our congress men and women and put our foot down that we will not tolerate the oil companies abusing the world this way. They understand that they have the biggest impact on the local and global economies, yet, typical American greed sets in with these companies.  Even while oil is the hottest investment these days no one can afford to invest because their 401k plan and stock market money is sitting in liquid form in their driveway. What are the oil companies doing to help the economy? They do not contribute to the needy, they do not contribute to the schools or education (which by the way is also on the rise across the country), and I am willing to also bet that the employee’s of these oil companies are still getting the same Just-Over-Broke salary. We need to put our foot down. I laugh when politicians think they can solve the problem by reducing taxes at the pump. We need to put the pressure on the oil companies now, tomorrow and till the end of time until they scream that they can no longer survive in their business. When their profits go from billions to low millions then I can see the grip loosening.

Perhaps we need to examine government involvement. At one time, the government regulated the phone companies, they regulated the air transportation industry - what happened when they did this? The cost for the service became affordable. The government went after Microsoft for unfair business tactics - and it was debated about Microsoft getting split up into different companies. Let’s apply this concept to the oil companies. It is monkey see, monkey do! What one oil company does the others are going to do. Driving down the street when one gas station raises their price per gallon so does the one next door. When one drops the price (a rare event these days) the other does. When gasoline does go down it only goes down 2-5 cents per gallon but it rises exponentially of what it drops. To me, that is price gouging and the industry as a whole should go before congress and the supreme court judges and lets cut down the noose that is going to hang everyone.

I encourage everyone to contact your elected represented official: locally, at the state level, and at the federal level — especially if they are due for election — force them to discuss the issue. Force those discussions to action and let’s get gasoline and everything that depends on oil and gas back under control so that we can all get back to a civilized life versus having to make the choice of the sustenance of life or gasoline in the gas tank.

And please, Exxon, BP, Shell and every other Oil Pirate - Give us a break!

Dont forget ME!

April 22nd, 2008

It’s amazing the number of technology jokes that are out there.  It just so happens in an IRC channel, we were on the subject of Alcohol - yes not everything is all business around here at Aelatis Technology.  In the late hours of the night, we do kick back, relax and take a smooth stroll through technology lane courtesy of #aelatis on irc.moofspeak.net.

This one just happens to be a really funny explanation of Windows ME, which was released just at the turn of the Millennium.

Going back to Alcohol, dont be stupid.  Drink responsibly.

Thanks,

Aelatis Technology Operations Center

December 11th, 2007

Ahh, the ATOC (pronounced “A Tock”) which is the Aelatis Technology Operation Center is finally a realization for Aelatis Technology. Complete with new phone system, slick VoIP hardware, and a schedule to have the bat phone manned for the duration of the business day in all 4 timezones across North America. But what does it mean? I like to think Simplicity.

The process is simple. The customer calls the operation center and can setup a work order, or open a trouble ticket for their website, dedicated server, SpamSoap, hosted exchange mailbox or any other solution that Aelatis Technology offers. This is the command center that serves as the liason between customer and technician. We try to minimize the amount of time that people need to be on the phone. What we want to do is have a system where you tell us what you need, and we go through a triage where we will then send the ticket to the most appropriate person to respond to your need.

With this system you can now have the most suitable and knowledgeable person assist you with what you need and not have someone trying to find their way through the problem or question. In this model, we can respond through phone or email and always keep you in the loop as to what is going on. This is an incredible thing to have for our nationwide computer service as it prevents someone from picking up the phone for a simple answer. Though they could still do that if that is what they prefer. We also have an option off of our phone system now to where you can hear a recording about our current network status or international onsite service status. Another way to make information more convenient. If you still have questions, you can simply choose to speak to Operations and we will pass on any more information we have.

We know that everyone is busy and our goal is make doing business with Aelatis Technology as easy as it can be. We are doing everything in our power to streamline our processes and this is just the tip of the iceberg. We are constantly asking ourselves “How can we make this better?” and this is just one of the byproducts of that constant questioning. We hope that you find it easy too.

Potential upcoming LAN party

December 2nd, 2007

The Aelatis crew and a few AelatisLAN fans met up at the Cactus Club yesterday to discuss future LAN events. We discussed a lot and I feel like a lot was accomplished on the planning side of things. As of right now we are looking at having a “small” 40 person LAN party at a community centre near Delta. If everything goes as planned, we may be able to have the LAN party span over a period of 3 days with affordable ticket prices. There are a few issues we are going to have to work out before we can say for sure that we’ll be able to use the community centre, but we will update everyone when we find out more.

There are some important reasons for us planning another “small” LAN party before we host large event. We need to test out a few new ideas on a smaller scale before we can use them on a large scale. If it is possible, we would like to use the community centre for our next big LAN event as well. However, we don’t know if the location will be suitable for 70 people. If we are able to host the potential “small” LAN party, it will be a good benchmark for us and we should be able to make our decisions for future LANs based off the data we collect from it. We will try to release more information as soon as possible.

Hope our B.C. fans are having fun in the snow,

LAN Updates

December 2nd, 2007

So it’s about two in the morning and the it’s-cold-outside-so-we-wanna-stay-inside LAN is well under way. Graeme is the awesome host of this particular LAN and has provided tons of candy, food, tables, chairs and all other sorts of good stuff. Things are going very well.

We’ve hashed out some details for at least our next two LANs and it looks like we got a location for it too.  The lunch meeting went as good as this LAN is going. I’ll post more details when I can think properly!

AEL… AER… AE Universe?

November 29th, 2007

Well it’s been far too long since I’ve posted anything on the blog or the forums sadly but things have been crazy busy the past couple of weeks for more reasons that you have fingers to count them on.

It, however, has been an absolute pleasure to again have Jason up here in the great white north working on a variety of devious plans on how to take over the world. We are definitely looking forward to a fun mini LAN this weekend where we’re going to hash out some more ideas for the next big AEL and just have an awesome time.

Coming deep from the depths of my madness the hopefully, (but unlikely), a final API freeze on Exile and enough features to make groups of tech junkies salivate. In the next couple of months I hope to be able to roll that out along with a brand new site… well a couple of brand new sites actually.

AEL: AelatisLAN. The crazy computer gaming festival we all know (and if you don’t you better find out) is going to have it’s own site finally with stats and standings, registration for the events and tournaments and it’s own game scheduling system.

AER: AelatisRADIO. Internet radio that’s just a little offbeat and a whole lot of different is also going to have it’s own site. Request songs, find out what’s playing and what’s coming up. (If we get energetic maybe some live stuff too).

AE.com: Our wonderful, wonderful but horribly outdated homepage will be getting a makeover of somekind. New content, new localizations, new services. Lots of wonderful stuff.

AE: Universe. It’s our world, we love to play in it and we hope you do too. We’re going to be tying all this stuff together with a single ID you can use to dabble around in all of it.

*phew* So lots of new stuff that’s being worked on, a few other new toys here and there. I’ll try and post more often, but there’s a ton of stuff to be done and no rest for the wicked.

See you all at next AEL.

Planning the next LAN event…

November 24th, 2007

So the time has come to start planning for the next AelatisLAN event.  We are penciling in the second quarter 2008 for the event to give Aelatis Technology enough time to get the word out.  The goal is to have steady, but controlled growth to make the event bigger than last time.  We also hope to make this event a multiday event.  No word on the cost of admission yet but again the goal is to make the event cost less than the first one.

Stay tuned for the up and coming aelatislan.com site and when we have the framework set in stone we will be sure to pass the word along.
